From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-kup (buttocks; anus) (Schuessler, 2007; STEDT). Cognate with Tibetan རྐུབ (rkub, buttocks; anus).

Alternatively, it may be related to (OC *kʰluːd, “cave; pit”) (STEDT).
