From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰuHtás (“become, been”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH-tó-s, past participle of *bʰuH- (“to be”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬏𐬙𐬀 (būta, “become, been”), Old Irish both (“been”), Ancient Greek φῠτός (phutós), Lithuanian būtas. The Sanskrit root is भू (bhū).
