This article describes the architectural and decorative project for the artist’s studio building located at 31-31bis, rue Campagne-Première in Paris and assesses the impact of André-Louis Arfvidson’s architectural innovation—i.e. apartment-studios arranged as duplexes—on modern architecture. Firstly, it studies the establishment of the artistic community in Montparnasse and links the spread of artist’s studios to the history of the district. It also analyzes the solutions found by the architect to problems such as the arrangement of the studios and the profitability of traditional investment property. This article then studies the critical reception of the building, which was awarded the second prize in the Concours de façades de la ville de Paris in 1912. Finally, it focuses on the case of one famous tenant, Man Ray, in order to put forward the hypothesis that the building was destined to the bohemian bourgeois of the day, more so than to the artistic community.
