Happy husband... This is where we were the other day, and yes, I gave myself permission to stop doing gruntwork and do what I NEEDED to do. I plan on more of that! So. Not only are we simplifying our home and possessions, but life and priorities as well. Life is too short, things of real importance deserve our attention, and yes, it's okay to be happy! I know, that should be obvious to anyone with an ounce of sense, but we do so often do things because we think we should, we must, someone…

I seem to have mis-dated my page, though! Heat really gets to me, after a run-in with heat exhaustion about ten years ago, so I have to time my outdoor activities in the summer with that firmly in mind. This night, the heat and humidity were marginal--I almost didn't go with Joseph to Rocky Hollow, but I was delighted I DID. The early-evening light made long shadows where I could hide... I often wear a damp kerchief around my neck when it's hot out...a trick my ancestors knew well…

Fishing River Bridge As many of you know, 2014 was rough for me...between two deaths in our family, one expected, one horribly not, plus travel, a mountain of work on the new book and my Sketchbook Skool stuff, I was drained and burnt out, just treading water trying to keep up. I tried to kick back, take care of myself, listen to myself and what my body needed...and what my spirit did. We got a new holistic doctor who explored some of the health issues (yes, stress and depression CAN mimic…

Wet-in-Wet Lake | I had my little sprayer with me, and pre-w… | Flickr Watercolour Book Illustration, Cathy Johnson, Couples Canvas Painting, Canada Geese, Travel Art Journal, Nature Sketch, Watercolour Inspiration, Easy Canvas Painting, Watercolor Sketchbook

I had my little sprayer with me, and pre-wet the HP paper before laying in rather heavy washes of mostly sedimenting color... I added the date, the note, and the geese in the background once I got home... And oops, I forgot I'd posted this already...oh, well.. Done at Cooley Lake, a Missouri Department of Conservation site...lots of Canada geese, and those 6 trumpeter swans, along with a lot of other small birds...

exploring primaries, WC pencil by Cathy (Kate) Johnson Claudette Johnson Artist, Katharine Watson Print, Cathy Johnson Watercolor, Kate Beaton Comics, Kate Thompson Artist, Derwent Inktense, Albrecht Durer, Faber Castell, Watercolor Pencils

I love to play with simplifying my kit, to see how I can lighten the load and still do whatever it is I want to. Here, you can see a set of muted primaries from Faber Castell's Albrecht Durer line, and a brighter set from Inktense...both are very versatile! (And if you don't want to be that intense, you can mix like crazy as you can see at lower left!) I've been working on my upcoming mini-class on watercolor pencils, as you can tell! It'll be a while yet, but you can watch for it HERE…
