The second installment in a cycle of Rumi settings entitled Three Themes of Life and Love, this work
explores a more mystical side of Rumi’s poetry. These pieces are written for SATB choir and
percussion accompaniment, to be played by a single performer. Just as Rumi’s works are at once erotic
and full of an earthy humanity, the use of these dramatic and colorful percussion instruments,
traditionally found in the orchestral palette, aids in placing Rumi’s words in an appropriately
passionate tone of expression. The occasional use of non-western instruments, such as the batá drum
in “Drumsound Rises” (the third of the three settings) give the music a raw, ethnic feel. “A Breathing
Peace,” in contrast to the ecstatic joy of “In Your Light” (the first of the three), describes
atmospherically a tranquil scene of night. And as with all of Rumi’s works, there is powerful emotion
waiting to burst forth, as described in the final contrasting line “and sudden flame catching.”

across the sky, a breathing peace
and sudden flame catching.

The texture and interpretation of this piece should create the utmost sense of wonder, mystery, and
tranquility. Word repetition (flower, open, etc.) establishes a spacial effect, such as an echo in a large
space or the repeated slow dripping of water. Legato/tenuto articulations may be thought of as
emphasis markings, putting a light stress on the note or syllable rather than thinking of the note as
being held in true legato fashion. Often these markings are paired with staccato articulations to depict
the emphasis of a stressed/unstressed pairing of syllables, and to exaggerate these patterns in an
appropriately dramatic affect. In a contrasting idea, the middle section of “and sudden flame
catching” is a free vocalise, depicting the kindling and leaping of flames in organic fashion. The
humming and vowel singing should be full of energy drawn from this idea.

 The Music from Westminster Choral Series consists of choral literature commis-
sioned or selected for performance by the choirs at Westminster Choir College
of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey, one of the foremost centers in
