Ekonomi virtual (atau terkadang ekonomi sintetis) adalah sebuah ekonomi darurat yang ada di dunia virtual, biasanya menukar barang virtual dalam konteks permainan internet. Orang-orang yang masuk ekonomi virtual lebih untuk kesenangan dan hiburan ketimbang kebutuhan, dalam artian bahwa ekonomi virtual kurang akan aspek ekonomi nyata yang tidak dianggap "kesenangan" (contohnya, avatar dalam ekonomi virtual sering kali tak butuh untuk beli makanan dalam rangka bertahan hidup, dan biasanya tak memiliki kebutuhan biologi secara keseluruhan). Namun, beberapa orang berinteraksi dengan ekonomi virtual untuk manfaat ekonomi "nyata".
