Benny Giay lahir di Onago, sebuah desa di dekat Danau Tigi pada tanggal 12 Januari 1955. Menurut catatan misionaris, tahun tersebut adalah tahun perkiraan. Onago, kecamatan Wakeitei, sekarang merupakan bagian dari Kabupaten Paniai. Onago merupakan sebuah kampung yang besar, dan orang tua dari Benny Giay merupakan kelompok masyarakat pertama yang masuk Kristen.[1]
Benny Giay adalah seorang teolog, intelektual, antropolog dan aktivis. Ia dikenal karena kegiatannya dalam rekonsiliasi untuk melindungi hak-hak orang Papua di Nugini Barat yang dikuasai oleh Indonesia.
