Awalnya direkam oleh Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton pada 13 Agustus 1952, di Los Angeles dan dirilis oleh Peacock Records pada akhir Februari 1953, "Hound Dog" adalah satu-satunya rekaman hit Thornton, terjual lebih dari 500,000 salinan, bertahan 14 pekan di tangga lagu R&B, termasuk tujuh pekan di #1.
