Alireza Ashori received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Wood and Paper Science and Technology from the University of Gorgan, Iran, in 1990 and 1995, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Bio-composite Engineering from the University of Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia, in 2004, with a minor in High Quality Printing Paper. Since then, he has served in the Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST) as a researcher and academic staff and now as Associate Professor. He has published 1 book, 3 chapter books in his related field, more than 130 scientific papers in highly ranked, respected international journals, and more than 30 conference proceedings. His major research interests include wood and fiber utilizations, property enhancement of non-wood fibers, pulp and paper technology, wood-plastic composites, and wood cement bonded composites. In 2012, he was honored to receive an Award for being one of the distinguished researchers in Iran. Dr. Ashori is the referee of more than 30 international journals (ISI ranked) in the fields of polymer science, composite materials, and pulp and paper.

ABSTRACT In this study, the suitability of using Iranian grown giant milkweed fibers (GFs) as a n... more ABSTRACT In this study, the suitability of using Iranian grown giant milkweed fibers (GFs) as a new raw material for thermoplastic composites was investigated. The thermoplastic polymer, polypropylene (PP) was used as the matrix polymer and the maleated polypropylene, Epolene G3003TM, was used as coupling agent. In the sample preparation, four levels of fiber loading (10, 20, 30, and 40 wt%) and three levels of coupling agent content (0, 1.5, and 3 wt%) were applied to discuss the mechanical properties of composites. GF/PP composites were prepared by a melt compounding process in a twin-screw extruder followed by injection moulding. Generally, with the addition of coupling agent tensile and flexural properties improved considerably compared with pure matrix and control specimens (without coupling agent). As expected, notched Izod impact strength significantly decreased as the mixing ratio of fiber increased. The results of the present study reveal that composites with good strength properties could be successfully developed using GF as the reinforcing agent.

ABSTRACT This article presents the application of agro-waste materials (i.e., bagasse and corn st... more ABSTRACT This article presents the application of agro-waste materials (i.e., bagasse and corn stalk fibers) along with E-glass fiber in order to evaluate and compare their suitability as reinforcement for thermoplastic composites. The hybrid effect of glass and cellulosic fibers on the tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the composites were investigated. Water absorption and thickness swelling were also studied. In general, the hybrid composites presented superior properties compared to the control (without glass fiber) samples. Additionally, synergistic improvements in the physico-mechanical properties of composites were obtained with the addition of glass fiber. Overall trend shows that with the addition of agro-waste materials, tensile and flexural properties of the composites were moderately enhanced. However, corn stalk fibers showed superior mechanical properties due to their high aspect ratio and chemical characteristics. Addition of glass fibers into the composites considerably enhanced tensile, flexural, and impact properties without having significant effect on the elongation at break. Morphological study also confirmed the impact behavior of composites. Moreover, incorporation of glass fiber with agro-waste fibers in PP matrix considerably decreased the water uptake and thickness swelling of the hybrid composites.

As replacements for conventional synthetic fibers like aramid and glass fibers, lignocellulosic fibers are increasingly used for reinforcement in thermoplastics due to their low density, good thermal insulation and mechanical properties, reduced tool wear, unlimited availability, low price, and problem-free disposal. Lignocellulosic fibers also offer economical and environmental advantages over traditional inorganic reinforcements and fillers. As a result of these advantages, lignocellulosic fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites are gaining popularity in automotive, garden decking, fencing, railing, and non-structural building applications, such as exterior window and door profiles, siding. Another class of naturally-sourced reinforcements of recent interest is nanocellulose-based reinforcements. This study provides a short review on developments in the area of lignocellulosic fibers and nanocellulose, and their applications in cellulose based thermoplastic composite industry.

Preparation and Properties of Wood Plastic Composites Made of Recycled High-density Polyethylene

This article deals with experimental investigation of composites based on recycled high-density p... more This article deals with experimental investigation of composites based on recycled high-density polyethylene (RHDPE) and poplar fibers (Populus deltoids) formed by air-forming and hot-pressing. The effects of the fiber content (55, 70, and 85 wt%) and compatibilizing agent (0, 2, and 4 wt%) concentration on the mechanical properties and water absorption were evaluated. The use of polyethylene-grafted maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA) improved the compatibility between the fiber and RHDPE. Adding PE-g-MA at 2 and 4 wt% in the composite formulation significantly improved both the stability and mechanical properties. The tensile strength of the composites containing PE-g-MA was superior to those of the composites without compatibilizing agent. As expected, the flexural of the composites increased with the wood content. Low internal bond strength was observed for the panels with different fiber loading and compatibilizing agent content in our study.

In this work, the screening of 147 microalgal strains from the Persian Gulf and the Qeshm Island ... more In this work, the screening of 147 microalgal strains from the Persian Gulf and the Qeshm Island (Iran) were done in order to choose the best ones, in terms of growth (biomass) rate and lipid content for biodiesel production. A methodology, combining experiments in labscale and pilot plant (open pond) used to produce and evaluate biomass and lipid productivity is presented for the systematic investigation of the potential of different microalgae species. The culture conditions, including photo flux (180 mE m À2 s À1 ), photoperiod (12 h light/dark), temperature (25 C), pH (z8), air (carbon dioxide) and growth medium, were kept constant for all experiments. Microalgae were screened in two stages using optical density (for evaluation of biomass concentration) and Nile red and gas chromatography (for determination of lipid content and fatty acid fractions). In general, maximum specific growth rate and the maximum biomass productivity were obtained after 8e12-day culture. Nannochloropsis sp. and Neochloris sp. were selected from the marine microalgal culture collection, due to their high biomass (50 and 21.7 g L À1 , respectively) and oil content (52% and 46%, respectively). If the purpose is to produce biodiesel only from one species, Nannochloropsis sp. presented the most adequate fatty acid profile, namely linolenic and other polyunsaturated fatty acids. However, the microalgae Chlorella sp. can also be used if associated with other microalgal oils. In addition, selected strains could be potent candidates for commercial production in the open pond culture.

Quantitative palynostratigraphy and palaeoecology of Tethyan Paleocene–Eocene red beds in north of Zagros sedimentary basin, Iran

ABSTRACT Biostratigraphic and quantitative characteristics of dinocyst assemblages and palynofaci... more ABSTRACT Biostratigraphic and quantitative characteristics of dinocyst assemblages and palynofacies have been used to interpret the paleoecology and sea level changes of Paleocene-Eocene red beds in north of Zagros sedimentary basin, Iran. One hundred forty-eight species and 69 genera of dinoflagellate cysts are recorded from 32 rock samples collected from the 153-m-thick outcrop section. Three dinocyst zones comparable to North Hemisphere midlatitude zonation are established and described. Three palynofacies differentiated-VI: proximal suboxic-anoxic shelf, VIII: distal dysoxic-anoxic shelf, and IX: distal suboxic-anoxic basin-suggest a suboxic-anoxic proximal-distal shelf and distal basin for the strata under investigation. The sequence stratigraphy events have been documented on the basis of palynological asset recorded such as palynofacies, SOM/MP ratio, dinocyst abundance and diversity, peridinioid/gonyaulacoid (P/G) ratio, proximochorate and cavate cysts ratio, and specific inner neritic, outer neritic, and oceanic taxa trends). The record of sea level changes for the Paleocene-Eocene red beds shows a third-order sequence with one sequence boundary (type II). The P/G ratio shows increasing upward trend of paleoproductivity in this sequence.

Physical properties of polyethylene-wood fiber-clay nanocomposites

In this study, nanocomposites based on polyethylene (PE), maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (... more In this study, nanocomposites based on polyethylene (PE), maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE), recycled newsprint fibers, and organically modified montmorillonite (nanoclay) were made by injection molding. The effects of two variable factors, namely, the nanoclay and MAPE contents, on the composite physical properties were examined. All blends were made with a fiber-to-PE weight ratio of 30 : 70. The results show that the addition of MAPE and nanoclay in the nanocomposite formulation significantly improved both the stability and water absorption properties. The improving effect of MAPE could be explained by the improvement in the quality of adhesion between the polymer and fibers. Nanocomposites containing 5 wt % MAPE and nanoclay exhibited minimum water absorption during the whole duration of immersion. The results of this research study show that wood-plastic composites treated with a coupling agent and nanoclay will be desirable as building materials for outdoor applications.

In this work, the effects of wood species, particle sizes and hot-water treatment on some physica... more In this work, the effects of wood species, particle sizes and hot-water treatment on some physical and mechanical properties of wood-plastic composites were studied. Composites of thermoplastic reinforced with oak (Quercus castaneifolia) and pine (Pinus eldarica) wood were prepared. Polypropylene (PP) and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) were used as the polymer matrix and coupling agent, respectively. The results showed that pine fiber had significant effect on the mechanical properties considered in this study. This effect is explained by the higher fiber length and aspect ratio of pine compared to the oak fiber. The hot-water treated (extractive-free) samples, in both wood species, improved the tensile, flexural and impact properties, but increased the water absorption for 24h. This work clearly showed that lignocellulosic materials in both forms of fiber and flour could be effectively used as reinforcing elements in PP matrix. Furthermore, extractives have marked effects on the mechanical and physical properties.

Al... more World demand for paper has increased at an average annual rate of 4.7% over the past 40 years. Although future growth will reduce to 2-3% the existing wood resources may be inadequate to meet this growing demand for paper especially in the Asia-Pacific region and Eastern Europe. In addition, logging is coming under increasing pressure from environmentalists concerned about habitat destruction and other longer-term impacts of forest harvesting. It is, therefore, necessary to consider alternative fiber sources to meet the possible shortfall of wood fiber for papermaking. Suitable nonwood fibers are abundantly available in many countries and are the major source of fiber for papermaking in some developing nations.

In this study, an attempt is made to understand the chemical and morphological characteristics of... more In this study, an attempt is made to understand the chemical and morphological characteristics of Malaysian cultivated kenaf fractions (bast, core, and whole stem). Results based on morphologyand chemical analysis indicate that bast and core fiber fractions in the kenaf are significantly different, although the chemical composition of kenaf is quite similar to the woody mass. In the case of whole stem fibers, it is concluded that the effective length of fibers from the whole stem is reasonably good for the purpose of making printing papers.
