With the support of a theoretical framework based on the arguments of the Trade-off Theory and Pecking Order Theory, the determinants to be considered in the study were established. Using a sample of 164 firms, the results from the multiple linear regression show that the liquid assets substituting for cash holdings and the level of leverage lead to lower cash ratios. Contrary to expectations, larger firms have larger cash holdings, emphasizing a positive relationship between the variables. Both Pecking Order Theory and Trade-off Theory are relevant for explaining the decisions regarding cash holdings, having the first major relevance. The study does not present evidence in favor of the precautionary motive, which it has strong implications for the literature on cash holdings.

To do so, qualitative research was carried out, involving semi-structured interviews with nine Portuguese companies. The interviews were analysed through content analysis. The results revealed various definitions presented by the firms, and in the majority of them, sustainability is perceived as a set of practices aiming to conserve the environment and value the social dimension. The results also indicated that concerning the implementation of sustainable practices, the most common ones come within the environmental dimension. In addition, the firms are seen to be implementing gradually a number of sustainable practices in the three dimensions: environmental, social and economic.

The aim of this research is to identify the main stimulating and inhibiting factors of this type of development tgrough the eyes of private agents in the tourism, agri-food and related sectors of an inland region of Portugal. A qualitative study was carried out, based on interviews with 15 private agents operating in these sectors. The results highlight as inhibiting factors the problems regarding governance and the lack of manpower, and as stimulating factors the importance of diversification and differentiation through innovation, as well as resources. The conclusions indicated here should be interpreted with care.

However, there has been a gradual concern regarding social responsibility and the spirit of mutual assistance in civil society and the business world. This study has as main purpose the discovery and understanding of the motivations and other factors such as satisfaction, happiness and well-being, leading to participation and development of voluntary work in the companies. To achieve the proposed objective, this research had the collaboration of the company Galp Energia to develop the case study about the volunteering programme 'Galp Voluntary', and for the collection of data through a questionnaire to employees who collaborated in the company's volunteer programme. The questionnaire was prepared in a digital format and placed on the company intranet from November 2011 until January 2012. The motivations and the degree of satisfaction and happiness of respondents in the study were measured using several scales: the first was developed by Clary et al. (1998), scale VFI (Volunteer Functions Inventory), the second scale SHRM (Satisfaction with Human Resource Management), was adapted from Jiménez, Fuertes and Abad (2009) and Silverberg, Marshall and Ellis (2001), and finally, we have used the SHS (Subjective Happiness Scale) developed by Lyubomirsky and Lepper (1997). To achieve the goal set it was necessary to proceeded to an extensive literature review in order to better know the current situation of corporate volunteering in the national context and, based on literature review, to develop the method of data collection and the hypotheses to be subsequently tested. Based on the results obtained from the questionnaire, it was concluded that there are significant differences in the motivational factors 'understanding' and 'protection' for female and male volunteers; likewise, when compared the importance of the motivations given by younger in relation to the more mature individuals, the factors 'understanding' and 'protection' also showed statistically significant differences. Additionally it was concluded that the volunteer's experience was satisfactory in all aspects, and, finally, that the satisfaction with the volunteer programme was positively related to feelings of happiness of volunteers.

This research aims to analyse if there are significant differences between two groups of volunteers (corporate and non-profit) regarding the motivations to volunteer and to analyse if the socio-demographic variables are the ones that most discriminate the two types of volunteers. The results indicate that the motivational factor recorded as the most relevant for both type of volunteers was Values and the less scored was Career. The results also evidence higher scores for all motivations for Non-profit volunteers when compared with the Corporate ones, pointing out to the existence of significant differences between the two types of volunteers for all motivations, except in the case of Understanding. Income and Values were the variables that most contributed for that distinction.

Design/methodology/approach ‐ This research had the collaboration of a company to develop the case study about its volunteering programme and for the collection of data through an electronic questionnaire. Findings ‐ The results indicate a similar hierarchical organisation of the motivations when compared with some previous studies. The volunteers' experience is satisfactory in all aspects, and is positively related to feelings of happiness. However, the results evidence a weak/moderate relation between volunteers' motivations and happiness/satisfaction. Practical implications ‐ More efforts are needed to improve the volunteers' training and formation, which was pointed as the less satisfactory aspect (similarly to other studies). Thus, it is necessary to question the methods usually used in the training provided, which may involve the restructuring of the training plan to adapt it to the employees' needs and to guarantee the quality of the work. Originality/value ‐ A great part of the existent research is focused on the motivations of "conventional" volunteers which collaborate occasionally with non-profit organisations. Thus, present study will expand the research in the area of corporate volunteering, contributing to better understand what really motivates, satisfies and makes volunteers happy with this activity.
