Wastes generated by industrial and agricultural processes have created disposal and management problems which pose serious challenges to efforts towards environmental conservation. A considerable amount of coconut shells and fibres remain in the environment as waste, so utilization of these materials for construction will be an important step to improve sustainability and eco-friendly construction. In addition to that it will help to produce light weight and economically profitable materials in construction field. The current study examined the suitability of partial replacing of coarse aggregate with coconut shell and coir fibres. To compare the above, test for compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, temperature resistance, water absorption, electrical resistance, chemical resistance, pH test of sample were performed. The specific gravity, bulk density and water absorption of coconut shell and fibres were analyzed. A study on the economic aspects was also carried out. The addition of fly ash helps to increase the strength and workability of concrete. The results obtained from above will be compared with conventional concrete of same mix.

With its primary focus being the involvement of everyone, TQM has the ability to improve economy of an organization, greater customer satisfaction, worker involvement and better management of workers within the companies. TQM's ability to adapt new ideas, tools and methods suggest that it can be applied in construction industry also. The objective of this paper is to review the latest studies which focused on increasing quality through implementing TQM in construction industry and its suitable applications in the different phases of project construction.

Environmental concerns, stemming from the high energy expense and carbon dioxide emission associated with cement manufacture have brought about pressures to reduce cement consumption through the use of supplementary materials. Materials such as Metakaolin, fly ash have good pozzolanic activity and are a good material for the production of high strength concrete which is getting popularity because of its positive effect on various properties of concrete. In this review the mechanical properties of Metakaolin and fly ash as a supplementary cementitious material are discussed.

The absence of fine aggregate helps increase the voids and water can pass through these gaps and reaches to ground level. The use of recycled coarse aggregates from construction and demolition is a sustainable solution with many environmental benefits and also reduces the number of virgin aggregates to be created, hence reducing the extraction of natural resources. This paper reviews the research developments of pervious concrete by replacing natural aggregates with different percentages of recycled coarse aggregate. The papers under consideration of review have conducted to identify various properties of pervious concrete such as mechanical and hydrological properties. Keywords— pervious concrete, compressive strength, permeability

As per the new building rules in some of the western countries, the building should be demolished after its service period. Out of number of demolition methods, cost and time efficient method is the demolition using implosion. In the implosion the structure implodes with the help of minimum amount of explosives. To overcome the limitations of implosion, a silent technique using Soundless Chemical Demolition Agents have also been introduced. Since now-a-days the importance is given to sustainable and environmental friendly construction, there should be effective control of the demolition waste. The demolition waste can be reused for the construction.

The dredged soil requires large area for its disposal. It is recognized that the offshore dumping of dredged soil causes disruption to the aquatic environment. The marine dredge soil cannot be used in the valuable construction process because it exhibits properties such as low shear strength, high natural water content and high compressibility. This paper aims to reuse the dredged marine soil as a sustainable material which is economical for the construction activities. Attempts were made to stabilize the dredged soil for the different applications such as embankment construction, road construction and for landfill. This study investigates the potential reuse of the dredged soil for the road construction. This paper describes a study to solidify the dredged marine sediment by using quarry dust. Quarry dust is a waste...

It represents an opportunity to upgrade the overall performance, sustainability and efficiency of an existing building. Seismic retrofitting is mainly done to provide existing structures with more resistance to seismic activity due to earthquake. Earthquake creates great devastation in terms of life, money and failure of structures. Therefore, increasing the seismic resistance of structures is of utmost importance, especially in case of old structures, and tall or expensive structures. When a building has been designed according to a seismic code, but the code has been upgraded in the later years, it results in deficiencies to exist in design or construction of the structure. In Kerala, there exist several old buildings which were designed for seismic zone II, whereas, at present Kerala belongs to seismic zone III. In this paper, a building that was designed for seismic zone II is selected. The analysis of the structure is carried out and the structure is redesigned for seismic zone III. The additional seismic resistance required for the structure is determined and retrofitting methods are proposed to achieve the required seismic strength.

Properly designed and prepared concrete results in good strength and durability. Sometime these mixes are found to be inadequate, hence variety of admixtures are used along with cement. A certain percentage of cement will be replaced separately with metakaolin and silica fumes. Hence the flexural strength test of concrete and evaluation of corrosion behavior of the reinforcement can be performed. The study of flexural property of concrete will be conducted at 7 or 28 days characteristic strength with different replacement level of cement (i.e.0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%). Corrosion behavior of reinforcement will be evaluated based on half-cell potential. Concrete samples will be cured in either fresh water of 4% NaCl saline water for 7 or 28 days of curing period. We assumed that the addition of silica fumes and metakaolin will improve the flexural strength characteristics of concrete and corrosion resistivity of ...
