Carefully researched and lavishly illustrated, the study provocatively exposes cultural and political connections that are often unexpected and disquieting. Two shorter essays analyze an artwork and mass-produced advertisement art to assess Germany's take on Korea and the East and what that means for the country's own search for identity and its stance on colonialism. The book challenges and extends established historical and art historical models regarding colonial modernity, the relationship between politics and modernism in art and dance, and the privileged status Nazism bestowed on international specialists. It makes exhaustive use of European, American, Korean, and Japanese primary and secondary materials and archival sources.

The majority of these are English language works, but we have also listed works in over twenty other languages whose script systems are based on the Latin alphabet. One fourth of all references in the database come with abstracts. Furthermore, although it is devoted to academic sources, the bibliography contains numerous references to translations of Korean literature.

The work highlights the historiographical problems of writing on modern Korean art by critically examining the research undertaken in Korea, Japan, Europe, and America. It further discusses the use of terminology like Western-style and traditional-style painting and its East Asian equivalents (yōga, nihonga, sŏyanghwa, han’gukhwa, tongyanghwa, etc.), stresses its political implications and questions its validity in terms of technique, materials, and formal analysis. Other chapters are devoted to the description of the early contacts of Korean Confucian scholars with Western arts through Edo Japan and the Jesuits in Ming and Qing China. Finally, the government-directed popularization of Western art under Japanese rule is examined through a discussion of leading painters and printmakers like Ko Hŭi-dong, Na Hye-sŏk, Pae Un-sŏng, Yi Chong-u, Chang Pal, and others.
