Estienne de la Roche wrote the first French arithmetic book in Lyon 1520 (2.ed. 1538), on the bas... more Estienne de la Roche wrote the first French arithmetic book in Lyon 1520 (2.ed. 1538), on the basis of Nicolas Chuquet's manuscripts (1480ff). I focus on his commercial arithmetic, and especially on his "multiplication" through subdivision of a higher unit (240 sous, pennies) and his misunderstanding of "long hundreds" of 120, which is commonly found in Northern England, Scotland, and Iceland.
