This enables one to explore the implications of Graeber’s ideas for the study of such topics and offers the opportunity to contribute to the study of the historical Jesus’s thoughts on debt relief, the « kingdom of God », and its relation to human society, as they can be pieced together from texts such as Matthew 18,23-34 and 6,12. Graeber’s conclusions are compared with the analyses of scholars attentive to the sociohistorical and cultural-anthropological background of Jesus’s parables. Jesus employed the imagery of the kingdom of God to also promote a social transformation; Graeber (although offering some stimulating thoughts) does not sufficiently take into account the discontinuity between Jesus and his followers, and the later allegorization of certain Jesus’s teachings.

Abstract:

This article provides some data and remarks on the reception of the Gospel of John in the Pistis Sophia (Codex Askew), with the twofold aim to shed new light on Pistis Sophia’s use of canonized Scriptures, and to contribute to the research on the Gnostic reception of the Gospel of John. Selected Johannine references in Pistis Sophia are listed and commented on, especially those in Pistis Sophia 4.141, a dense section which is key to understanding the distinctive soteriology and Christology of this text. The analysis shows that certain passages from John play an important role for Pistis Sophia. Pistis Sophia may have elaborated its soteriology in response to criticisms from “mainstream” Christianity and in parallel with certain developments that occurred in Sethianism and Valentinianism.

Abstract: This essay aims at providing data about the role of Origen and the Alexandrian tradition in Antonio Rosmini’s thought. Origen is one of Rosmini’s auctoritates in several significant issues, such as the election of bishops and the (non- ordained) “priesthood of all believers.” But Rosmini also rejects some of Origen’s views, e.g., in his exegesis of John’s Prologue. The last part of this study deals with the “Alexandrian” heritage in Rosmini’s (and J.H. Newman’s) thoughts on the doctrinal, dogmatic,
hermeneutical, and ecclesiological progress.

Following an overview of the fragments, this paper will focus on the enigmatic saying about “the herb which has bitterness” (str. 3.9.66.2), trying to shed new light on its meaning and especially on the sense and background (often overlooked) of the anti-Encratite interpretation given by Clement. The text will be examined in parallel with other passages from Clement’s works and with other literature as well, including ancient medical and botanical literature.

Abstract
This contribution analyzes the Dialogue of the Savior (NHC III,5) in the light of the concept of a “Johannist Constellation” of texts, proposed by Mauro Pesce and Adriana Destro. Selected passages from the Dialogue are investigated to verify whether this text can be included in the Johannist Constellation, by considering (in particular) cosmology, Christology, soteriology, and the themes of heavenly ascent and mystical vision. The gospels of John and Thomas, in view of their connections with the Dialogue, take on an important role in the analysis.

Egypt is documented both by the material evidence of the manuscripts (P. Oxy. 1, 654, and 655; NHC II,2) and by the quotations of or allusions to Thomas' logia in later literature coming from diverse authors, groups, and traditions, which differently transmitted, used (or rejected), and (re-)interpreted this gospel.
After a brief reference to the manuscripts transmitting Thomas, this article examines a selection of the (possible) literary testimonia to provide an overview of the broad and diverse reception of Thomas in Egypt from the second to the fifth century CE. Selected texts from Gnostic, Patristic, and monastic literature are analyzed here to verify whether they could show some influence of Thomas upon them, or they simply represent instances of the presence of similar themes and concepts.

The observations developed here are primarily stimulated by Ivan Miroshnikov’s recent volume, "The Gospel of Thomas and Plato. A Study of the Impact of Platonism on the 'Fifth Gospel'” (Leiden, Brill 2018). After summarizing Miroshnikov’s theses, this article presents a series of observations in dialogue with them and other studies. The issue of the extent and character of possible Platonic influences on the Fifth Gospel will be examined, as well as the diffusion and reception of philosophical doctrines in a given cultural context (from the viewpoint of historical-religious trajectories), in particular in early Syriac Christian contexts.

This topic is connected to the relationship between Th and the Synoptics (and other early Christian texts)—hence, to the vexata quaestio of Th’s
“dependence”/“independence.” The article begins with some methodological considerations on the composition and sources of Th, also trying to provide a list of the sources that have been proposed for this gospel. The second part examines the possibility of a relationship between Th and the Pauline epistles, a theme which is emerging with new perspectives in the research on Th’s sources and parallels: some of Th’s logia seem to have connections with certain Pauline trajectories and texts. The final part focuses on Th 17 and 1 Cor 2:9, also exploring
their relationship with some parallel texts (e.g. 1 Clem. 34.8, Turfan M 789, and 1 John 1:1), in order to investigate the possible sources of Th 17.

The gospels of John and Thomas, in view of their connections with the Dialogue, take on an important role in the analysis.

contemporary Italian Protestant sources (1915-1918), mainly Methodist,
Baptist, Waldensian, and non-denominational journals and magazines. It is a case study that shows how a religious minority perceived (and reflected upon) what happened to another minority. This research reveals that Italian Protestants had a “distinctive viewpoint” on the Armenian Genocide, if compared with other contemporary Italian press (Catholic magazines and national newspapers). That perspective was connected to the self-representation of the Evangelical minority in Italy. For example, the Methodist and Baptist magazines – in particular – often represented a controversialist (anti-Vatican) perspective, emphasizing an argument shared with part of the national press: that of the “pope’s silence” on the war crimes of the Central Powers. The Armenian Genocide, hence, became one of the instances where the Italian Protestants could highlight their own stance, in its connection
with the Entente’s one and in its difference from the Vatican’s one (according to the way they interpreted it). The distinctive feature of the Waldensians was that of deep empathy, and almost of their identification with the Armenians (this is explicit in a source of 1896, at the time of the Hamidian massacres), in the light of the common experience of having suffered a systematic extermination plan (for Waldensians, especially in 16th-17th centuries).
In line with the activity of the Bologna Research Unit of the PRIN project, this panel explores 1) the influence of texts and motifs from early Christianity on the literature produced in the years 1431-1549 (e.g., the use of Patristic heresiological categories during the confessional debates; the reception of Biblical motifs in the ideology of reform); 2) the rise of the so-called "Catholic orientalism" in Renaissance Rome (biblical scholarship, interpretation of Hebrew texts, Christian Kabbalah), which influenced the conceptualization of different types of Christianity.

"Secret Books, Heavenly Realms, and Non-Human Ritual Specialists
in the Nag Hammadi Literature and Ancient Manichaeism"
Scholars interested in ancient gnostic groups and Manichaeans appealed to the methodological toolbox of the emic/etic dynamics to integrate the outside observations of ancient heresiologists with the inside reflections provided by texts written and read by ancient seekers of gnosis. Scholars explored the relevance of "secrecy" in Gnostic and Manichaean kinds of literature and its claims about a special, salvific knowledge. This also leads to investigations into the social and rhetorical functions of secrecy, and to reevaluations of the emic/etic division in the production and reproduction of secrets. The conveners of this panel invite the participants to further pursue these avenues of interpretation of Nag Hammadi and Manichaean literature. The topics to be investigated cover the subjects of book production and circulation, descriptions of otherworldly journeys, and articulations of ritual sequences involving angels and/or demons. The questions to address include, but are not limited to, a) the tension between esoteric knowledge and self-promotion of authors and readers as "holders of religious truth" and b) the convergence or divergence between marks of esoteric self-identifications and exoteric descriptions of different religious practices, books, and imagination of invisible realms. What are the ideological, social, and religious functions that both "secrets," and their preservation and circulation were expected to perform in the late antique world of religious gnosis?
The panel is open to 3 proposals. To submit a paper, please send your paper abstract (max. 1500 characters, spaces included) directly to the panel convenors (see email address in the pdf). Please include your institutional affiliation and your email address in the paper abstract.

The emergence of religious conflicts, the transformation of societies in a plural sense, the global phenomenon of migration and the associated phenomenon of diasporic religions, and more generally, the layering of identities, beliefs, customs and traditions determine the need for new systems and tools designed to enhance understanding and knowledge.
This workshop aims at building a hub for the study of religious pluralism inside Sapienza. The central objective of the project is to create a highly specialized, interdisciplinary and trans-national syllabus of methodological approaches to the study of religions.
The points of view adopted by the research team are those of the History (History of Christianity, History of Religions), Anthropology, Philosophy, Sociology, and Law; from this first stage of work, the research group is open to interdisciplinarity.
