Do oczyszczania ścieków zastosowano mikroorganizmy, które posiadają szerokie zastosowanie do produkcji żywności fermentowanej i są bezpieczne dla organizmu ludzkiego jak i dla środowiska. ABSTRACT The study a empts to use four strains of Rhizopus oligosporus for biotreatment of wastewater from potato starch industry. First the strains were tested on model medium imita ng potato wastewater and than on industrial wastes. The Rhizopus mold applied in the experiments is widely used in the producc on of fermented foods and is recognized as safe for humans and the environment.

The aim of our study was: 1) to investigate the antimicrobial resistance of performic acid as high active and non toxic chemical disinfectant against Escherichi coli (hygiene indicator test microorganism used in industrial micro- biology) and 2) to evaluate the electrical impedance measurement method usefulness for fast and high precise test of antibacterial activity. Material and methods. Four types of antimicrobial disinfectants (commercial 35% hydrogen peroxide, 1% performic acid, 35% hydrogen peroxide and 15% formic acid) were tested against Escherichia coli as hy- giene indicator test microorganism. The impact of corn grain variety on the ethanol production effectiveness was determined. The scre... more The impact of corn grain variety on the ethanol production effectiveness was determined. The screening of 258 various corn samples were done. The endosperm of recognized 258 types of corn was semi flint as a consequence of crossing between female parent with dent type seeds and male parent with flint type seeds. The tested cultivars fall into two groups, ie. 133 belong to single cross (SC) and 125 belong to three-way cross (TC) hybrids. These hybrids of corn were created with four male parents: 96 with S61328, 61 with S80660A, 20 with S07787A and 8 with S09347. The corn samples were mashed and fermented with distillery yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae which produced ethanol from corn mashes yielding maximum 81.33% of the theoretical value. It was noted that the corn samples with higher starch content had lower efficiency of starch saccharification (−0.35, p < 0.05). This fact generates negative correlation between variables ethanol (L/100 kg starch) and starch content (−0.43, p < 0.05). The highest level of reducing sugars in grains led to higher productivity of ethanol. The comparisons in groups generated with multivariate exploratory techniques (cluster analysis, k-means clustering, PCA) showed that it is possible to distinguish a statistically different cluster with the highest ethanol yield (35.6 L of ethanol per 100 kg grains). Moreover, the PCA analysis showed that hybrids of corn with S80660A male parent have the biggest impact on efficiency of ethanol. The presented results clearly prove that not only starch content in corn grains determine the ethanol productivity.

The liquid part of this stillage was proved that can be recycled in the ethanol production from corn, without disturbing the fermentation process. The corn seeds were fermented employing the conventional non-pressure method for gelatinizing as well as including a novelty: Recirculation system of distillery stillage liquid part instead of process water. The efficiency of fermentation and main chemical parameters of stillage were estimated. The liquid part of stillage was recycled 28 times. At these conditions distillery yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae efficiently produced ethanol yielding 79.80% of the theoretical, keeping the vitality and quantity on the same level. Celem prezentowanej pracy była ocena wzrostu oraz metabolizmu trzech szczepów drożdży Brettanomyces bruxellensis podczas hodowli prowadzonych w bioreaktorze z zastosowaniem mieszania (250 rpm) i napowietrzania (0,7 vvm), w temperaturze 30°C, bez regulacji pH oraz z regulacją na poziomie 4,0±0,2. Najsilniejsze stężenia kwasu octowego, sięgające 10,9-11,6 g/dm, odnotowano w wyniku hodowli z regulacją pH. Brak regulacji powodował zmniejszenie wartości pH do 2,5-3,0, co istotnie zahamowało rozwój drożdży, zmniejszając ich żywotność o 75%. Stężenie wytworzonego kwasu octowego było w przypadku tych hodowli również istotnie zmniejszone i mieściło się w zakresie 6,63-7,55 g/dm.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of the stillage recirculation in the mashing process of triticale for non-byproducts production and reducing the fresh water consumption. The number of recirculation cycles which can be applied without disturbances in the ethanol fermentation process was investigated. Winter triticale BOGO and "Ethanol Red" Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast were used in the experiments. The method of non-pressure cooking was used for gelatinizingthe triticale, commercial α-amylase SPEZYME ETHYL and glucoamylase FERMENZYME L-400 were applied for starch liquefaction and saccharification. The process was conducted at 30°C for 72 h, next after distillation the stillage was centrifuged and the liquid fraction was used instead of 75% of process water. The aim of the study was to assess the course and efficiency of aerobic thermophilic treatment of... more The aim of the study was to assess the course and efficiency of aerobic thermophilic treatment of a high-strength (COD=35gO(2)/l) effluent from potato processing. A comparative analysis was conducted of the treatment effects achieved using batch, repeated-batch (with cell recycle and medium replacement) and continuous treatment operations. The analysis consisted in (1) examining the extent of removal for the major parameters of the wastewater: COD, TOC, TN and TP (chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus), and (2) determining the impact of oxygen deficit on the formation and assimilation of organic acids in the course of the three treatment operations. When use was made of the repeated-batch operation, the values of the COD and TOC removal rates were more than twice as high as those obtained with the continuous process, and more than five times as high as those obtained with the batch process.

Bioethanol can be produced from wide range of raw materials like starch, sucrose and cellulosic based sources. Sugar beet and raw juice, as its intermediate product, constitute very profitable substrates for bioethanol production, considering content of easy available fermentable sugars. In this study, sugar beet pulp and raw juice were fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae distillery yeasts and bacterium Zymomonas mobilis. Different medium dilution rate as well as yeasts preparations (Fermiol, Safdistil C-70) were investigated. Fermentation was run for 72 h at 30°C. Quality of obtained raw distillates was evaluated using GC method. S. cerevisiae distillery yeasts turned out to be more favourable microorganism than bacterium Z. mobilis for sucrose material fermentation.
