optimization algorithm, the prominent swarm intelligence metaheuristic. The sensitivity to parameters’ selection is
one of the main limitations within the swarm intelligence algorithms when solving combinatorial problems. These
parameters are often tuned manually by algorithm experts to a set that seems to work well for the problem under
study, a standard set from the literature or using off-line parameter tuning procedures. In the present study, the
parameter search process is integrated within the running of the ant colony optimization without incurring an undue
computational overhead. The proposed strategies were based on a novel nature-inspired idea. The results for the
travelling salesman and quadratic assignment problems revealed that the use of the augmented strategies generally
performs well against other parameter adaptation methods.

ABSTRACT Composite cathode La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ-SDC carbonates (LSCF-SDCC) for applications o... more ABSTRACT Composite cathode La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ-SDC carbonates (LSCF-SDCC) for applications of low temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LTSOFC) were developed. LSCF-SDCC were mixed using high energy ball milling technique via dry and wet milling method followed by calcinations at 700, 750 and 800 °C. The findings reveal that different calcinations temperature and milling techniques gives effects to the composite cathodes powder. Clear peak intensity demonstrate from wet milling technique as confirm via XRD analysis indicates that crystalline structure has been improved. FESEM investigation demonstrate the presence of large particles in the resultant powder resulting from the increased calcination temperature. LSCF-SDCC composite cathodes powder produced via wet milling technique have good fine fraction and demonstrates good crystallite structure to be served as cathode of LTSOFC compared to dry milling technique.

ABSTRACT Synthesised PVA/CS/SiO2 beads had been considered as a promising alternative to conventi... more ABSTRACT Synthesised PVA/CS/SiO2 beads had been considered as a promising alternative to conventional means of heavy metal removal. The PVA/CS/SiO2 beads were successfully synthesised through a simple dropwise method and different ratio of cross-linking agent, glutaraldehyde (GLA) of 0, 0.25M and 0.5M were used to cross-link the PVA/CS/SiO2 beads. Solubility and swelling behavior of the beads were also investigated within the prescribed time of 24h in three different medium of acidic, distilled water and alkaline solution. Result of solubility test showed that PVA/CS/SiO2 beads without GLA dissolves in acidic medium but insoluble in distilled water and alkaline solution. Meanwhile, the PVA/CS/SiO2 beads cross-linked with GLA did not dissolve in all three mediums. The swelling test revealed that PVA/CS/SiO2 beads without cross-linked with GLA showed the highest of swelling in acidic solution which was 225.2% and PVA/CS/SiO2 beads cross-linked with 0.5M GLA recorded the lowest of swelling in acidic solution which was 98.6%. This concluded that as the cross-linking ratio increased, the swelling behaviour of the PVA/CS/SiO2 beads decreased.

LSCF-SDCC has been prepared using high energy ball milling technique via dry milling method. The resultant LSCF-SDCC composite cathodes powder then were calcined at 700, 750 and 800 °C with soaking time of 1, 2 and 3 hours. The findings reveal that different calcinations temperature and soaking time gives effects to the composite cathodes powder. Clear peak intensity demonstrate from calcination temperature 750 °C as confirm via XRD analysis indicates that crystalline structure has been improved. FESEM investigation demonstrate the presence of large particles in the resultant powder resulting from the increased calcination temperature and soaking time. LSCF-SDCC composite cathodes powder calcined at a temperature of 750oC for soaking time 1, 2 and 3 hours demonstrates good crystallite structure to be served as composite cathode SOFCs compared to samples calcined at 700oC and 800oC with soaking time 1, 2 and 3 hours.
