Papers by Taras Shmanko
The article is an attempt to present the conditions and circumstances of the creation
of Piotr Mohyła’s Trebnyk. The book, published in 1646 by the Kiev Lavra Printing
House, is a perfect example of the contribution of the Kiev Church to the development
of its own liturgical identity. An important element of it was the consistent work on
liturgical texts combined with editorial activity.
Although the syncretism characteristic of the Mohyla reform, from today’s perspective,
cannot be considered a good method of rebuilding liturgical life, the very
attempt to restore order and revitalize this important area of the Kyiv Church’s identity
is still instructive to us today. The Mohyla texts went through a difficult path, but eventually
became an important material for liturgical development not only in Ukrainian
churches, but also for other denominations that benefit from the Byzantine liturgical
heritage.
Author’s comments on the margins of
Dmytro Tuptalo’s «Chetii Minei»
The article contains an analysis of marginalia present in The Lives of the Saints, a hagiographical text of the Metropolitan Dmytro Tuptalo (of Rostov) published at the end of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century. At first, in the Kyiv edition, D. Tuptalo’s marginalia were printed together with the text of The Lives, but in later Moscow reeditions of the book they were withdrawn.
A thorough analysis of D. Tuptalo’s marginalia present on the pages of The Lives gives us an idea of some details of the author’s perception of hagiographical materials and of his views on the whole spectrum of Church problems.
Key words: author’s comments, notes, bibliographical references, marginalia, author’s perception, hagiographic text.
of Kyrylo Tranquillon Stavrovetsky
Taras Shmanko
The article presents some aspects of theological thought of Kyrylo
Tranquillon Stavrovetsky that pertain to the final purpose of man and all
the creation. Pivoting on the analysis of all three Stavrovetsky’s books,
the author of this article tried to present the main notions and eschatological
concepts applied by Kyrylo, as well as examples of their use in pastoral practice
of his days. After examining the major eschatological topoi of Kyrylo’s
eschatology, eschatological issues are discussed in the context of the reception
and critique of Kyrylo Stavrovetsky’s works.
