Geographical region and local traditions differ widely with the intake of vegetable supplements to the diet. The production of vegetables suffers from abiotic and biotic stress responses. To enhance the host plant resistance or tolerance against these stresses and enrich the vegetables with prolonged shelf-life, high nutritional status, it is essential to produce genetically modified vegetables. In the 21st century, genetically modified transgenic vegetable crops have a major contribution to food and nutritional security. This study explores the potential prospects of the global vegetable scenario and the methods to develop genetically engineered vegetable crops by transgenic technologies. © 2022 Friends Science Publishers

Along with this, it also helps to reduce unnecessary application of insecticides as well as environmental pollution. Hence, in the current study, an attempt has been made to identify the optimum time point of insecticidal spraying. Based on different model selection criteria, cubic model is observed to be the best fit and optimum time of spraying insecticides against gundhi bug was found to be at 23 DAT.

Pollen genotype selection for genes expressed in both the haploid and diploid phases of the plant... more Pollen genotype selection for genes expressed in both the haploid and diploid phases of the plant life cycle can lead to correlated responses detectable in the sporophyte. Here, Impact of pollen selection for heat tolerance was assessed in segregating population of maize. Two subsets of F 1 were made among which one was self-fertilized with heat treated pollen grains while other set by normal pollen where no such selection was made that resulted in two F 2 populations TF 2 and CF 2 , respectively. The TF 2 population recorded significantly higher mean values for pollen per anther (4646.78 ± 176.70) than that for control F 2 population (3321.89 ± 164.91). In addition, the test F 2 population recorded significantly higher seed yield per plant (2.02 ± 0.72 g) than that of test F 2 population (1.38 ± 0.08 g) under heat stress. These two populations were also evaluated under normal condition to verify whether the TF 2 population showed heat tolerance improvement has any impact on yield attributes. The result showed non-negative impact of pollen selection on performance of TF 2 under normal condition. Thus, pollen selection could be used to selectively improve the trait of interest. The segregation analysis of SSR markers followed the expected Mendelian distribution in CF 2 population whereas a significant deviation in allelic frequency was observed in TF 2 population. These results clearly evidence that the gametophytic selection for heat tolerance in F 1 generation had positive effect towards increasing the resistant alleles in F 2 population of maize.

In the present investigation, attempts were made to study morphological, biochemical and molecular diversity of E. alsinoides collected from different regions of Maharashtra. Significant morphological differences were observed when accessions were compared with accession from Pune (PU1). Dendrogram for morphological traits clustered Evolvulus accessions into two groups considering 90% similarity. Chemical constituents in alkaloidal extract from 14 Evolvulus accessions were analyzed using high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC). HPTLC profiles showed presence of 12 distinct compounds in the fraction. Dendrogram constructed on the basis of Rf values, grouped Evolvulus accessions in three major groups. Further, molecular diversity was studied using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Of the total 387 RAPD loci amplified with 40 primers, 220 loci were polymorphic with 56.1% diversity. A dendrogram constructed with UPGMA, grouped the accessions into two major clades. Wide morphological, biochemical and genetic diversity observed among the E. alsinoides accessions could probably be because of differences in their geographic environmental conditions.

From the study, wide variation in the traits suggests segregation in different characters in the lines which needs to be stabilized through advancement of generations. Analysis of Variance clearly showed the presence of wide genetic variability for the character concerned among the genotypes. Characters with high Coefficient of variation for instance chlorophyll content suggests comparatively higher influence of the environment for the expression of these characters and vice versa. Lycopene content of purple tomato BCPT 7-4/2-1 was higher tha...

This viral disease is extremely contagious and infectious in nature and the general symptoms include fever, cough and pneumonia followed by a loss of taste, diarrhoea, shortness of breath, acute respiratory distress syndrome and even death. The disease has caused unprecedented risk against the global fitness scenario and therefore have altered the socio-economic-political structure of society. There has been no reported cases of any immunity against the virus, however immune-compromised people are extremely vulnerable to this disease. The diagnosis of the disease is usually done by quantitative Real-time PCR but other methods of detection like serological testing is gaining prominence these days. Approaches are directed towards the development of vaccine can...

Numerous research reports have appeared in different national and international scientific journals by studying its nutritional and medicinal properties over the past decades. Different reports also show that due to its multipurpose uses, it has recently got attention in different countries. It is a tree that is sometimes called a miracle tree as all its parts are used for nutritional and pharmacological properties. It is a very valuable food tree which is highly nutritive, grows very fast and having drought resistant characteristics. It can also play an important role in soil and water conservation and is very helpful for mitigating climate change. This study provides a brief overview about the multipurpose uses of Moringa oleifera and its implication in climate change mitigation.

To produce the essential secondary metabolites, plants are the major and important target source ... more To produce the essential secondary metabolites, plants are the major and important target source materials for conducting the high-profile metabolic engineering studies. Metabolic pathway engineering of both microorganism targets and plants target contribute towards important drug discovery. In order to efficiently work out in advanced plant metabolic pathway engineering techniques, a detailed knowledge and expertise is essentially needed regarding the plant cell physiology and the mechanics of plant metabolism. Mathematical and statistical models to scale and map the genome for integrative metabolic pathway activity, signal transduction mechanism in the genome, gene regulation and the networks of protein-protein interaction can provide the in-depth knowledge to work efficiently on plant metabolic pathway engineering studies. Incorporation of omics data into these statistical and mathematical models is crucial in the case of drug discovery using the plant system. Recently, artificia...
