Although the general support and response for this goal tends to be strongly positive, many obstacles and challenges to providing this commodity for all global citizens still exist. Within the framework of the IEEE Experts in Technology and Policy (ETAP) working group, and under the umbrella of IEEE's Collabratec Internet Technology Policy Community coordinated by IEEE consultant Jared Bielby, a group of industry experts have collaborated to identify and propose solutions to these challenges. After basic needs and electricity are addressed, the six challenges identified include the following: Infrastructure, cost, digital literacy, availability, disinterest, and public policy. Each of these challenges is explored, and various options for solutions are discussed. The advantages of universal global Internet connectivity are many and varied, and providing universal access for all will most likely support the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals.

While most, if not all of the following guidelines apply to all Internet-connected devices, the presented guidelines focus on internet traffic security best practices for wired or wireless networks. They detail security mechanisms necessary for consideration at the manufacturing design phase rather than after deployment of devices to internet service providers and end users. The paper leads with the assertion that a thorough study on protecting Internet traffic does not yet exist, and proposes, based on our findings, that existing technology is not yet sufficient to meet the goal of protecting Internet traffic. The best practices presented are centered around countering and preventing malicious activity. By setting up a secure network with industry standard security protocols, the risk and potential legal liabilities associated with an unsecured network can be proactively addressed.

Most, if not all, of these guidelines would apply to any Internet- connected device; however, this paper focuses on security and privacy measures either peculiar to the IoT or especially relevant to the IoT. This paper assumes the end-to-end processing model of the Internet, in which application features such as security are handled by end nodes of the network, client and server hardware. It focuses on security mechanisms, including patching and updating, that should be considered at the manufacturing design phase rather than after devices have already been built or deployed.

Station related failures can cause multiple component outages that can propagate to other parts of the network resulting in severe damages. In order to minimize the effects of station related outages on the composite system performance it is necessary for the designer to assess their effects. This task can be achieved by including station related outages in the composite system evaluation.

Different station configurations can have quite different effects on the system reliability performance and these effects should be considered prior to selecting a particular configuration. This paper presents a relatively straightforward method for including station configuration in a composite system reliability study. The

The technique is used to evaluate composite system performance as a function of station configuration. The basic technique used to evaluate station-related outages is explained in detail using a ring bus configuration. A small composite test system is used to examine the impact of ring bus, double-bus double-breaker, one and one-half breaker and one and one-third breaker configurations.
