Max Sigmund Cynader, CM OBC FRSC (born 24 February 1947) is a Canadian ophthalmologist and neuroscientist. He currently holds the Canada Research Chair in Brain Development.[1]
Born in Berlin in a displaced persons camp, the son of Polish Jews who escaped Poland before the invasion of Poland,[2] Cynader emigrated to Canada in 1951.[3] Cynader received a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University in 1967 and a Ph.D. from MIT in 1972. He did postdoctoral training at the Max Planck Institute in Germany before teaching in the departments of psychology and physiology at Dalhousie University. In 1988, he became head of the Ophthalmology Research Group in the University of British Columbia.[4] He is the founding Director of the Brain Research Centre and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at Vancouver Coastal Health and the University of British Columbia.[5]

- 2012 – Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.[8]
- 2014 – Inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.[9]
