Forty healthy cats were included in this study. Cats were divided in two groups: Exposed to tobacco smoke (ETS; n = 20) and non-exposed to tobacco smoke (NETS; n = 20). Blood levels of cotinine, total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH), protein carbonyl (PCO), advanced oxidative protein products (AOPP), total antioxidant status (TAS), copper, zinc-superoxide dismutase (Cu, Zn-SOD), catalase (CAT), total thiol (T-SH), interferon gamma (INF-γ), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin β (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), inter-leukin 2 (IL-2) and iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), selenium (Se) levels were measured. Hematological and biochemical parameters were also measured. Serum cotinine, TOS, OSI, PCO, AOPP and LOOH levels were higher, whereas TAS and Cu, Zn-SOD levels were lower in ETS group. In ETS group INF-γ, IL-1β, IL-2, and IL-6 levels were higher. The Cu level was higher in ETS group. Blood reticulocyte number, serum creatinine and glucose were higher in ETS group. It could be concluded that exposure to tobacco smoke in cats impaired the oxidant/antioxidant balance and potentially triggered the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

They also produce leaner carcases with arguably better meat quality. For these reasons the determination of muscle fibre number has received much attention.

In each experiment, Welsh mountain ewes were randomly assigned to either control (C) or nutrientrestricted (R) groups. In the fi rst experiment, mild maternal undernutrition (85% of daily nutritional requirement (DNR)), and in the second experiment, severe maternal undernutrition (50% of DNR), were imposed between 0 and 70 days of gestation (dg). Controls for both groups were maintained on 100% of their DNR throughout the experiment. In each experiment, ewes were killed at 126 ± 1 dg by an intravenous injection of pentobarbitone. Th e semitendinosus muscle was dissected, and sections were stained for alkali-stable ATPase. Th e total number of primary and secondary fi bers and the total number of fi bers were estimated. In both experiments, there was a signifi cant decrease in primary, secondary, and total fi ber numbers (P < 0.05 for each). We speculate that the decrease in primary fi ber number in both experiments is due to some of the large, central, and alkali-ATPase-negative (slow) fi bers at near-term being secondary fi bers. Th erefore, the real primary fi bers may not be aff ected.

The main objectives of this study is to evaluate C-reactive protein (CRP), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) in bitches with pyometra and control bitches to explore the possible variety between the groups to detect the morbidity of the disease and contribution of these parameters in the condition of MODS. All bitches underwent ovariohysterectomy (OVH) and blood sampling was performed just before and after 15 days of the surgery. TNF-α, CRP, and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in pyometra group before the OVH (P<0.05, P<0.001, P<0.001, respectively), and CRP and IL-6 levels were significantly high after 15 days of OVH (P<0.001, P<0.05, respectively). Two-segmented neutrophils were significantly lower in pyometra group before (P<0.05) and after OVH (P<0.01). It is revealed that with this study, CRP and IL-6 could be used for inflammation detection when leucocyte number was normal in operated bitches with pyometra. Oxidative stress was not apparent in bitches with pyometra. Also, platelet (PLT) level and neutrophil segmentation index (NSI) might be good indicators to identify the chronic phase and the severity of the disease and risk of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in bitches with pyometra.

It is difficult to know why exactly each horse performs these behaviours, there may be specific causal factors for these activities in the horse. Homeopathy can contribute to the treatment of these disorders, because it approaches the organism as the sum of the specific characteristics of an animal when it is in a state of health or illness, at the physical, mental and psychological level. The application of homeopathic laws during anamnesis allows us to achieve a deeper understanding of the horse, considering all its special characteristics. This study has been conducted with 17 horses showing one of the stereotypic behaviours of cribbing, circling, wall kicking and self mutilation. Homeopathic remedies are determined specifically according to the constitution and stereotypic behaviour problem of each horse. One month after the begining of the treatment, the symptoms of stereotypical behaviours were found to be decreased and after two months considerable regression were detected. Cribbing and self-mutilation were completely treated. Circling and wall kicking were decreased. To our knowledge, this study is the first report to cure the stereotypic behaviours of horses with using homeopathic remedies. This study suggests that homeopathy is as an effective therapy method which is used uncommonly in stereotypic behaviours of horses.

A total of 24 dogs were used. Dogs were divided into two groups as ketamine and propofol. The ketamine group received ketamine (5 mg/kg) intravenously while the propofol group received propofol (4 mg/kg) intravenously. Blood samples were collected before sedation and 30 minutes after induction. Serum antioxidant and cytokine levels were analyzed and neutrophil functions were determined. Respiration rate, serum malondialdehyde, IL-4, IL-6 levels, and phagocytic and chemotaxic activity of neutrophils were decreased (P=0.001, P=0.010, P=0.014, P=0.039, P=0.008, and P=0.037, respectively), oxygen saturation were increased (P=0.025) in the ketamine group. Serum IL-6 and IFN-γ level were decreased (P=0.015 and P=0.032 respectively), chemotactic activity of neutrophils were increased (P=0.049) in propofol group. The administration of ...

Different horse breeds have differentperformance traits such as speed or endurance, overall, horses are more successful in both sprint and endurance (marathon) racing than human athletes. Higher percentages of skeletal muscle weight/ body weight and type II muscle fibres in their skeletal muscle, more tendons and ligaments in lower extremities and higher stride length and frequency make horse athlethes as superb sprinters. The cardiac output of horses during exercise are approximately ten times superior to human marathon athletes while the maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) and lactate tolerance are at least twice those of humans. The haemotocrit doubles in horses during exercise by releasing erithrocytes from the spleen while no increase in human athletes. All these factors that enhance aerobic capacity make horses better endurance athletes than humans. However, the improvement rate in human athlethic records are superior to the horses in both sprint and endurance. This might be due to the inbreeding of horses from very small genetic pool for selection and/or fewer scientific research carried out about the effect of enviromental factors such as training and nutrition on horse performance compared to human athlethes

The weight and crown-rump length of fetuses were measured and gestational age was estimated. Semitendinosus muscle (ST) or hind limbs (for smallest fetuses) were dissected and stained for alkali-stable ATPase and slow myosin heavy chain (MHC) antibody and also examined under the electron microscope (EM). Based on histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron microscopy study, qualitative findings were obtained. The results suggested that some secondary fibres early express slow MHC. These small, slow expressing secondary fibres adjacent to the large, slow expressing primary fibres began to occur at 52 dg and these increased in size at around day 69 and then migrated around 87 dg to act as a scaffold for the next generation of secondary (tertiary) fibres. We conclude that some of the large, central, slow expressing (also less intensely stained wi...

Male Sprague–Dawley rats (150–200 g) were divided into six groups and each group comprised of five rats. Hepatic injury-dependent hyperlipidemia was induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4, 1.25 ml/kg). Coumarin and coumarin derivatives esculetin (35 mg/kg), scoparone (35 mg/kg), 4-methylumbelliferone (35 mg/kg), or coumarin (30 mg/kg) were administered to experimental groups at 12-h intervals. Animals received the derivatives esculetin, scoparone or 4-methylumbelliferone prior to the administration of a single toxic dose of CCl4. Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels significantly increased in CCl4-treated group ( p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, and p < 0.05, respectively), while levels of se...
