Thanks! That was my guess from seeing when it happened, but I couldn't do it reliably so I thought I was missing something.

I recall that some passive item mentioned it "increases missile deflection from jumps" or something like that. What aspect would that affect?

Every time you jump, missile tracking markers get pushed away from your jet by a certain amount. That's what these upgrades affect.

That makes sense. But the position that matters for the redirect is the one before that push, right?
