Yes, exits are relative to the direction you enter from.

Have you exhausted all possibilities? Remember the top and bottom of the map wrap round. You could also return to the entrances on the left and explore s other path. Rooms can also be searched, with a 1 in 4 chance of finding a secret door. Teleport Traps and backslide spells can also move you to undiscovered squares.

However, if all those avenues have been exhausted, I guess it is a loss, unless you have any other characters with backside, or a grappling hook if the way has been blocked  by a chasm etc. I have never had a game which ended in dead ends, but I guess it is still a small possibility despite the ways around mentioned above!

Thanks for clarifying, that makes more sense to me now. I'm loving the game, thankyou!

Hello! Here to report a dungeon ending in a dead end -- on my second attempt, I never made it past the second column of the map. Was really bummed, since I'd found the game very fun on my first try! Some kind of revision to prevent this possibility would be great -- feels pretty bad to fail not to some perilous obstacle but because the promised dungeon (a path to the Lair) just doesn't exist. The last half hour or so was especially tedious, sending a character round to all the various dead ends to check for secret doors or the remote chance of a teleport, racking up XP on random weak monsters that she'd never get to use to progress... Bummer! Really enjoy the game otherwise; hope there can be a fix for this someday.

how about of you are using the Tunnels of Nechrubel expansion then a pit swallows you into the tunnels in this situation?

I am working on another small pnp game where this kind of thing happens - it is a side-scrawler and the floor collapses if you hit a dead end

This does seem to he a very rare occurrence, though - I never had it happen on 10+ pre-repease playthroughs of BASILISK!

Gosh, thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Yeah, it does seem like a small chance, which is why I wanted to confirm that it can indeed happen. The sudden cave in sounds like a cool idea! I hadn't looked at the Tunnels rules yet (saving 'em up). Really having fun with the game and looking forward to the next. Thanks again for your reply :)
