When Spanish-English conversation partners view their interaction within a service-learning frame... more When Spanish-English conversation partners view their interaction within a service-learning framework emphasizing reflection, they perceive their language use as authentic and meaningful. Technologies such as Skype allow individuals and classes to form international communities based on mutual goals of service and learning. This is one way that the many benefits of service-learning can be accessed even where the local Spanish-speaking population is small. Resources for initiating partnerships and sample reflection activities will be shared.
I present the rationale and methods for integrating service-learning projects into my Advanced Sp... more I present the rationale and methods for integrating service-learning projects into my Advanced Spanish Conversation course. Most of these students, despite having completed a two-year sequence, have had very little interaction with native Spanish speakers outside the classroom. When they develop mutually beneficial relationships with native speakers, my students overcome anxiety, improve proficiency, and gain cultural competency. Written student reflections attest to this growth. I discuss strategies for connecting my students with the community given Manhattan’s relatively small Spanish-speaking population, and I outline my approach to integrating weekly reflection into the course with maximum time efficiency for the instructor.

In order to understand the history, promises, and challenges underlying this cultural phenomenon, we must consider the perspectives of its many participants: translators, writers, publishers, critics, bilingual educators, young readers, and parents. By bringing together original interviews with diverse representatives of these groups and by discussing specific textual examples, the session fosters dialogue on this dynamic body of literature.

This essay juxtaposes original translations of contrasting images from the novel En una silla de ... more This essay juxtaposes original translations of contrasting images from the novel En una silla de ruedas [In a Wheelchair] by Costa Rican writer Carmen Lyra and Poemas de la inmovilidad [Poems of Immobility] by Uruguayan writer Luisa Luisi to reveal how representations of intellectuals who are paralyzed might complicate discourses of the artist, social hygiene, and eugenics in early 20th-century Spanish America. Lyra portrays her protagonist's paralysis as a tragedy, but his disability is also the source of social mobility that allows the novel to depict marginalized members of Costa Rican society. Luisi contests modernista aesthetics of perfect forms, countering with a multifaceted exploration of inner space enabled by physical stillness. Through their depictions of hospitals, asylums, and sanitariums, both writers bear witness to bodies the modernizing project would prefer to hide, and imagine alternative forms of progress.
Mexican historian and literary writer Cristina Rivera Garza approaches the space of the asylum no... more Mexican historian and literary writer Cristina Rivera Garza approaches the space of the asylum not as a monolithic mechanism of rigid control and silence, but as a continual negotiation of bodies and words. The characters in her 1999 novel Nadie me verá llorar improvise their own unique paths through the physical structure of La Castañeda asylum and the sociocultural space of mental illness. Through its narrative techniques, the novel positions its readers, too, in an indeterminate interpretive space. Readers’ paths through the fixed structure of the novel are as idiosyncratic as the characters’ trajectories through La Castañeda and Porfirian society. By representing and fostering such maneuvers—which Michel de Certeau has termed “tacticsâ€â€”Nadie me verá llorar challenges the subject/object dynamic inherent in conventional concepts of madness. Rivera Garza’s novel manifests a relationship not of reading and writing subjects and voiceless objects, but of interdependent, mutable subjects. Viewed in the context of 1990s mental health care reform initiatives throughout Latin America, the “tactics†at work in Nadie me verá llorar reflect the reality of individuals currently living in psychiatric hospitals, as well as the potential for reform movements to resituate both concepts of mental illness and individuals who are identified as mentally ill.

It introduces tools and vocabulary for analyzing poetry, narrative, theatre, and film, and relates these to cultural texts in other genres such as songs, visual art, and nonfiction narrative. While the context of each text is briefly explored, a chronological panorama of literary periods is beyond the scope of this book. Pre- and post-reading activities may be completed individually or in groups, in or out of class, and include support for language, literacy, and writing skills. Activities build in complexity.

Intermediarios: Introduction to Spanish<>English Community and Legal Translation and Interpreting... more Intermediarios: Introduction to Spanish<>English Community and Legal Translation and Interpreting is an open-access textbook intended for students who have advanced skills in both Spanish and English and a basic familiarity with translation and interpretation. Activities are based on the U.S. context. Translation activities increase in difficulty. The sequencing of interpreting activities develops skills gradually by beginning with memory exercises, then moving into class role plays, and finally working with legal interpreting exercises of increasing difficulty. Judicial interpreting activities target the three modes of interpreting used in the judicial setting: sight translation of documents, consecutive interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting.

This book examines narratives of madness written by women in the context of postmodern Latin Amer... more This book examines narratives of madness written by women in the context of postmodern Latin American literature. It explores a selection of canonical writers: Cristina Peri Rossi (la nave de los locos/ Ship of Fools, 1984), Lya Luft (La casa vermelha/ The Red House, 1987), Daniela Eltit (El infarto del alma/Soul's Infart, 1994), Cristina Rivera Garza (Nadie me verá llorar/ No One Will See Me Cry, 1999) and Laura Restrepo (Delirio/ Delirium, 2004). Close reading of these works reveal a pattern of literary techniques --a poetic of madness- employed by the writers to represent conditions that defy language, make political crisis tangible and register cultural perceptions of mental illness through literature.
This is the first book devoted representations of madness in Latin American narratives that establishes a dialogue between theories from the Anglo-European tradition and Latin American perspectives.
