    One of Them Days

The Hip-Hop radio host intro, the SoCal urban-suburban setting, and a star studded Black led cast all led me to one conclusion: Classic films about the Black American experience are so back. I’m really glad something like this got a wide release and not the bullshit Netflix treatment. Messy as hell but every single bit of it invoked side splitting laughter from me. I would say this movie is like a modern day Friday, two friends down on their luck going on the wildest adventures of their lives. Loved it and would definitely recommend.

    The Union

    ★★½

Nothing about this movie is really “bad” to me; then again it’s past midnight & I am a bowl deep. It’s just meh for the most part. Fairly decent action & shot on many beautiful locations. Doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously which I feel is missing in a lot of modern, upbeat Action/Action Comedy. Kinda Austin Powers-esque but immensely less funny (shoutout Mike Myers, the goat). Reaches severe, but Netflix standard levels of corny…but overall not mad at it.

Nosferatu is exactly what you could expect from Robert Eggers, an ambitious and deeply melancholic tale of determination against mystic forces & a descent into madness. The entirety of this film’s runtime maintains a solid atmospheric tone; really leaning into the terror of the story. Eggers’ gothic world was strewn together carefully with the looming shadows in every scene, the scenes strictly lit by candle, the impressive use of real rats, the twisted and sensual visual metaphors. The performances of Lily Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult truly engulf you in the same feeling of agony Thomas and Ellen feel. Great film overall!

    The Substance

    ★★★★★

Absolutely unhinged from beginning to end.

Coralie Fargeat handed us one of the best films of the year and everything about it is unsettling. The intensity of the camerawork, the boosted audio on every movement, every hard hit and squelch, the Experimental/Electronic soundtrack, and the stellar, career (re)defining performances all contributing to the grossly intriguing story that is The Substance.

Filled to the brim with bloody and bold gore, this body horror fairly compares to the great works of Cronenberg…
