  Gets all the small stuff right.

  Consistently excellent in the swerves it makes on its way to expected plot beats. Every character has some believable humanity: the hero is tough but succeeds through resourcefulness more than superhuman force, and the villain loses because of small overplays rather than any one huge contrivance.

  Bonus points for some truly phenomenal practical car stunts: you really see and feel the weight of things crashing and scraping and bouncing around.

  Not quite enough happening for the movie to hold its shape across the full runtime, but it does a great job building palpable dread through small actions (a dislodged nightlight, a moved toy).

  Terrific sense of location, too: the fact that you can tell where you are in the house in most of these obscured-view shots based on a few key doorways and corners is really skillful.

  Honorable mention goes to the experience of seeing this in a fairly crowded…
