I liked how so much of the atmosphere (in its use of light/shadow) suggests that all the movie is an apparition made manifest; something ripped out of darkness and forced into space, or otherwise put into being where it wasn't before. It's a theme through the narrative (the way nosferatu is beckoned) but the moments it's rendered visual almost necessarily break your immersion -- the break is the point.
