Lost in Translation 2003
Visually beautiful, brilliantly acted and perfectly soundtracked. All the fundamentals of Lost In Translation are rock-solid and underscore its themes of alienation, love and aging really effectively. Its use of depth-of-field and muted colours make its most iconic shots some of the most easily identifiable in cinema. Tonally, it plays the rom-com angle from 80% romance and 20% comedy, using splashes of humour to make its characters more compelling and human rather than letting it absorb the whole film.

One of the best box office comedies of its era for how much it commits to its jokes and how many of those jokes are packed in to such a short runtime. The last thing I'd call it is smart, but it still deserves credit for its satire despite the hypocrisy of multi-millionaire celebrities calling multi-millionaire celebrities stupid. While I was watching this, the two halves of my brain were fighting. One was saying it was the best film and cast they could have done with this prompt, and the other realised that making tongue and cheek jokes about your corporate misogynist overlords doesn't actually stop them making billions of dollars off this movie and failing to address any of the product's flaws beyond winking at the camera ironically. But then Ncuti Gatwa started mansplaining Pavement's discography to someone and the secret third half of my brain decided it was kino.
