The Umbrellas of Cherbourg 1964
This reminded me so much of The Notebook (2004) plot-wise than I was expecting. Funny thing that it has the more realistic and melancholic ending than the latter despite its more obvious romantic 50s Hollywood melodrama-esque conceit, with its gorgeous but obviously artificial cinematography and set-design. Can definitely see this as an influence on La La Land (2016). Also love how montage-like the pacing is, with it never sticking on a scene more than it absolutely need to.

Love this film's preoccupation in the first half of telling the motorcycle courier's story as if its an urban legend; something heard via word-of-mouth and columns from newspaper articles (I cracked a smile at a moment when our narrator runs out of things to say and the story seemingly ends so the scene starts to fade to black but then he suddenly continues it so the scene fades back in).
Visually, the film's use of grainy 16mm stock, hand-held tracking/POV…
