Yangs style is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. His use of long takes and static shots are so masterful it’s a shame he passed so early.
The performances, especially Hou Hsiao-hsien as Lung were incredible and let us see the quiet desperation suffered throughout.
Lung embodies the longing for the past, where Chin is a symbol of a brighter future and change. I never found myself looking away from the screen and always felt a certain connection to the characters and their ways of thinking.
Edward Yang is the greatest director to ever live.
