Last week was my birthday, and the only reason I mention that was because it was also my grandmother’s birthday. She has since passed away and I wanted to honor her by watching her favorite film ever on our birthday, The Birds. Unfortunately I had a stomach bug so we had to reschedule but tonight was lovely. We all shared some memories and then watched it.

She would talk about this movie every time I’d ask her what her favorite movie…

Not for kids but definitely has a 12-year-old’s sense of  humor and feels like it was made with a 12-year-old’s understanding of what a violent horror movie should be. I’m not knocking 12-year olds by the way.

And like yeah there are some funny cuts and lines here and there, but it’s like they say when you look into the eyes of a psychopath and you see emptiness. It’s like that for every violent and gory kill. There’s nothing behind…

Unnecessarily and unrelentingly evil in so many ways but also the most pulpy and true to what it’s an homage to. Those two things never really let up and I love it for that. Ford phones it in but is always grimy. Quan is so great. It is unfortunate just how culturally insensitive it is but this is clearly made by two men going 1. Insane and 2. Through some deep shit. Not an excuse, just wild. So wild. I need more raw and insane Spielberg.

It’s interesting that every one of Bong’s American movies (or movies that take place in the US) deal heavily with the 1% and/or the heads of evil corporations. While Parasite slightly deals with that too, it’s not in the zany and on-the-nose way shown in Snowpiercer, Okja, and now, Mickey 17. I think it’s just a style thing, as it seems Warner decided not to hold back (maybe on a few things). It’s something I’m growing a bit tired of. …

    Director’s Cut

Whoever at DC/Warner said, “We gotta get the 300 guy for this,” was correct this one time. The graphic novel, which I haven’t read, is (I assume) full of enough “maturity” to match Snyder’s late 2000s edgy style, which I personally think is fun…most of the time. Though the superhero commentary has been done 100 times over, Watchmen still feels refreshing to see for the first time, probably because it’s so stylized.
