An underwhelming and sometimes overindulgent narrative that rarely struck me emotionally. Batman as the personification of vengeance is a brilliant conceit, but the character - and those around him - didn’t really advance from there. Further, where JOKER succeeded in its interestingly ambiguous politics which skewered aspects of both the neo-liberal left and conservative right, here, clunkily drawn social commentary and overt liberalism lets the film, and the cause, down.
That said, the tone - best encapsulated through the use…
Vinterberg beautifully constructs his film through music, dance, colour and a sumptuous visual style which demonstrates such a love for life. Ultimately, though, this is a tragic ode to alcohol; a celebration of a moment-in-time when it went hand-in-hand with fun and all of life’s possibilities, but a warning against the crises and crutches of middle life, and the utter randomness of who makes it through (and really lives) and who doesn’t.
An intriguing premise but unfortunately not enough to rescue a fundamentally flawed film. Traversing genres can be interesting when done well, but for the most part, this felt like a collection of pointless scenes that advanced neither character nor plot. Poorly written and shot, Promising Young Woman feels like a film that thinks it’s cool but lacks real substance.
