    Babygirl

the least transgressive film that purports to be about transgression that i’ve seen. robot lady runs a robot company, the hot intern makes her lose her place in the robot script. feels like it’s trying to be eyes wide shut but lacks the satire of wealth and power and desire — babygirl is too literal for that, too efficient, slips too easily into montage, never staying in a scene long enough to build tension. all caricature, no character.

can’t trust a guy who orders a different brand of bottled mineral water at every meal. but that’s Hollywood, always selling a new story, lying in the interstitials. wonder how long Altman waited for the day the wind spun the mills that fast at sunset. it all turns up so much dust, which somehow he wrangles into an airtight flick.

the only courtroom drama i've seen where retelling versions of the story from multiple perspectives works, probably because it invites the surreal and finds resolution beyond the halls of justice. the actors perform with a physical expression that reminded me of silent films, arresting to watch, beautifully shot. i've never seen the layers of tree canopy in a forest captured so well on film.

Good Time served over ice. the lack of diegetic sound in the opening scene gave it a bit of a music video feeling, which i never quite shook. but i laughed at the puke, court, and touche/touchée so joke's on me!
