    Monkey Man

    ★★★★½

this might be because this is the first feature i've watched in a while, but monkey man is quite literally the most impressive directorial debut i have seen in theaters.

relentless yet profound in its storytelling, monkey man is equal parts John Wick equal parts Kill Bill equal parts Fight Club equal parts Slumdog Millionaire, showcasing a perfectly crafted mesh of well-choreographed good ol' traditional movie violence, depictions of harsh social realities, and indian folk mysticism to tie it all…

definitely one of the movies of all time. the first two acts made me think the plot was gonna go somewhere even remotely profound or heck even satisfying for that matter.

a period piece of the queer experience with a modern twist, inu-oh is anything but a run-of-the-mill film experience. instead of being anachronistic, perhaps its biggest twist, the use of blues and glam rock music, was what made it effective, becoming a vehicle to not only tell tales of institutional defiance and the role of artists to tell stories of the disenfranchised but also celebrate the queer icons that have shaped the myriad counterculture movements across time and across cultures.…

    Poor Things

    ★★★★½

an obscene and hysterically hilarious story augmented by a visual and sonic signature like no other, poor things is pretty much the quintessential lanthimos film in my book. drawing a lot from the absurdist elements of Dogtooth but doing away with its dark disposition, the film was able to carve out a perfect and enticing narrative about the ethics of scientific inquisition, self-actualization within a conformist society, and fucking fucking - lots of it. this grandiose yet effervescent narrative worked in close synergy with its maximalist steampunk visual aesthetic and its weird and dissonant scoring. absolutely groundbreaking!
