Chaplin: His Life and Art: 76/?

    The Criterion Collection presents
    MODERN TIMES
    Spine #543

    Sing!! Never mind the words.

The bulk of 2021 hasn't exactly been overwhelming in its kindness. When I first started my journey into the life and art of Charlie Chaplin, I certainly didn't expect that I'd still be going about it some 18 months later—nearly as long, in fact, as the sabbatical Charlie took after the release of City Lights. He traveled the world in those…

    Letterboxd Season Challenge 2018-19
Week 1: Coming of Age in the 2010s

None of this will matter when I’m 38.

An essential coming-of-age film. An essential British film. Low-budget and unpolished, but still beautiful and even more charming because of it.

I have already turned these moments into the Super-8 footage of memory.

I’m having a hard time finding the words for this movie. It feels very personal to me; I’ve lived parts of it, in a way. Oliver feels…

    All About Almodóvar: 15/?

Still a lot to take in—and a lot to love—years after my initial watch. In the context of his work it feels inevitable, a true love story not only for parents and children, but for the act of creation as a whole. There are benchmark films in his catalog that feel like a culmination of something, where elements he’s played with in the past seem to mature and bloom—this is one of them, and a standout work for sure.

Glad I finally crossed a long-time dream double-feature off. This film echoes and enhances All About Eve in beautiful ways—lies to tell truth.

    —The show must go on.
—No, dear. Margo must go on.

Monumental and delicious and truly one of the best ever made, I really don't know what else to say. Immediately beloved by me.

    Don't try to understand it.

Nolan gives you the key to enjoying it early: just accept that he's gone much, much deeper than anyone wanted him to.

The set pieces are impressive, but when the Master Filmmaker of Our Time essentially rolls out a Fast & Furious with a time-travel aura, you know we're in trouble. The problem may be, in fact, that we've given this man far too much credit; any legitimate writer who sees both Dom Cobb and The…

Guess why I’m smiling? ‘Cause it’s worth it.

    Huge year for googly eyes!

Takes nicecore to a level so far and above what feels natural in the world that it's actually destabilizing. Marcel's cup runneth over with hope and optimism, and walking into the movie after a rough day/week/month/year, I wasn't sure I'd be able to handle it, but the movie is a great big hug and a great big push forward into the inescapable difficulty of ~everything~ and it's damn near impossible to not fall under its spell.

Was also helped by the Tiffany Pollard meme, but make it Isabella Rossellini?!
