I’m torn. I was very entertained, but very often in a “what even is this movie” way. Timothee Chalamet’s performance swings wildly between “baseline Chalamet” and a passable “Jim Carrey”. Songs were silly but serviceable, with the best tunes shamelessly pulled from the 1971 film. Lots of distracting CGI, though the giraffe was impressive. All that said, I had a good time and don’t regret watching it (once).

Jungle Cruise 2021
Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Jack Whitehall are thoroughly charming when they are bantering with one another. Whenever anything else is happening, unfortunately, including all the big action set pieces, I really just wish they’d go back to bantering.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) 2020
A few really excellent moments, surrounded by a bulk of decidedly average film. Honestly, kind of the whole DCEU experience in microcosm.

The Post 2017
A competent and engaging film, but not especially remarkable entry in Spielberg’s filmography. The subject matter is elevated by today’s current events, of course, but the conclusion of the film didn’t strike me as being as impactful as I imagine it was meant to. The cinematography seemed quite classical, and I quite appreciated the attention to the mechanics of typesetting and printing, as I have both a personal and professional interest in typography as well as a family history connection to the printing of newspapers.
