The least interesting thing about this movie is Mishima's ultimately idiotic worldview (although I wonder if Schrader was making any geopolitical insinuations in this movie), but the path taken to get there and the urge to transcend normal human accomplishment to something otherworldly and sublime is endlessly fascinating and relatable.
