  It's funny to watch this after Magnolia, a movie that expects you to get knocked out of your seat every time its stories intertwine. Here, names mentioned offhand become characters in their own right without any fanfare. Every single one of them effortlessly meshes into a single story, and you notice how they keep shifting in and out of the same shot before you realize the movie's been doing this the entire time.   ★★★★ Watched 10 Mar 2025

  Like his contemporaries, Rossellini moved on from neorealism into their own styles. But he stayed that course more than any other Italian director. Refocusing his scope from one city to another. Then broadening it to span a whole country. Here, the story is continental. Showing that even this remote locale has no shortage of interlopers and returnees no matter how inhospitable it may be.

  Some highlights:

  • There's an American character who looks like Charles Barkley and says "Fo' Shizzle"

  • They never explain why they call him Hitler, and nobody ever comments on it.

  • There's a genuinely well done bait and switch dream sequence.

  • The second part of this movie is entirely filler.

  • When Hitler goes to hit on a village girl, his goons say "Go Hitler! Go Hitler! Go Hitler!" to egg him on.
