The abuse of a neurodivergent person by the “justice” system and his being discarded when unmasking are upsetting and relatable imagery. Especially alienated because of his trauma and disability, Arthur is punished for being weak in the first film, and in this one he’s punished for the powerful shadow/mask which was supposed to make him safe. The worship he received for his mask was never for him, and it was inevitable said mask would slip as bravado won’t save you…

Even without my worldview holding that the pirates were completely justified, taking back from the American corporate empire which purposely causes Somalian poverty in the first place, or my hating the US military global police propaganda, I can’t imagine enjoying this movie.
Tom Hanks’ performance is smug, whiny and dislikable, and the bare minimum is done to make us care about Phillips as a character. So obnoxious to repeat over and over “he has a family” without developing said family…
