The Talented Mr. Ripley 1999
When Saltburn came out, every other review on here was calling it a worse The Talented Mr Ripley. Now I feel like we collectively owe Saltburn an apology, because having seen The Talented Mr Ripley, I honestly feel like Saltburn might be better. Or, perhaps more accurately, that The Talented Mr Ripley really wasn't very good anyway, and there was more room to go up than down.

Even laying aside the propaganda, the emotional crux of this film, which I assume is the cause of the glowing praise—namely the "resolution" between Maverick and the metaphorical "ghost" of Goose—is greatly diminished by A. the fact that Maverick and Rooster's survival is not so much caused by any enhanced maturity or carefulness on Maverick's part, but a combination of dumb luck, ubiquitous martyrphrenia, "enemy" (Iranian) incompetence, and everyone else simply swinging around to Maverick's reckless way of doing things…
