  I'm realizing I'm not the biggest fan of courtroom dramas.

  I think the premise and themes this film aimed to interact with were very potent. Personally, I just didn't feel the impact of this exploration and found myself wishing we could spend more time with the protagonist/writer.

  The film engages with a lot of interesting ideas around motherhood, generational trauma and bonds, and colonialism; it just didn't really click with me.

  I adore the final few scenes of this film. It's kind of genius how Mike Leigh juxtaposes the suffocating, cringe-inducing scenes at the birthday party with the warm and gentle environment Shirley and Cyril have created in their home.

  Also, weird that Lily Gladstone's character, as the only woman of the colour in the film, was also the only character without a name...

  I unfortunately did not click with this movie as much as I expected considering the subject matter. One of the reasons for this being my very low physical tolerance for strobe lights and shifty/unsteady visuals; there were many scenes in this I couldn't look at ("dream" sequences, miniDV footage).
