A film that is unsure of what it wants to say and ends up not saying much at all. A wealth of matters seem to always linger just outside of and below the story and can be felt (or intuited, with much projection and effort from the spectator) in certain moments, but end up ultimately unexplored.

A film about autonomy and emancipation, about choice and being made to choose under false pretenses. The family's story can be taken as a representation of the Philippines' position during WWII, but I did find the film's meditations to be self-sufficient and calling it a metaphor would be understating its power. What I take from this beautiful work is, simply put, that the choice for a lesser evil is never true choice.
