Starts as a straight noir but the film reaveals itself to be melodrama in equal measure as it goes along. The two main stars are Joan Crawford (obviously) for her powerful anchor performance but Michael Curtiz really makes the most out of every shot. I was impressed almost immediately with the lighting and shot composition. I felt myself lean forward as the opening shots alone demonstrated that I was in for something made by expert craftsman.
