Unintentionally, I compared this movie to hypothetical ones where we substitute "girlhood" with various identities: a group of less conventionally attractive girls, overweight girls, nerdy boys, or athletes—groups hindered by circumstances from realizing their teenage aspirations. While these movies don't quite capture the eerie fascination of this one, they feel too realistic and grim. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Some plot points threw me off badly. I just could not get over the fact that the father married the sister of his dead wife. I think we can read the movie as an allegorical story for the kid and the new mom coming to terms with this situation and resolving their guilt which is still yikes.
