  I always love Bergman in colour, but this felt more like an intellectual exercise in acting and direction than it did a full narrative film. It's interesting to watch him and his ensemble clearly working at their a-game, but it doesn't have the emotional core of insight other Bergman films have.

  If this was edited down to a 2hr 45min film (trim down episode 1 and 4, half episode 2, leaving episode 3 full) then it would be sweeping awards.

  I'm talking Best Actor for Owen Cooper, Best Supporting Actor for Steven Graham, Best Supporting Actress for Erin Doherty, Best Cinematography for Matthew Lewis, Best Original Screenplay for Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, Best Director for Philip Barantini, and Best Picture.

  This would have hit so different if it was released when it was originally planned to in 2024. Now that we are living through a second Trump term, the satire in Mark Ruffalo's frankenstein hybrid of His Orangeness, Musk and Liberace stings all the more harshly. I actually think this benefits the dark comedy aspects of the film, which make you want to both laugh and bury your head in the sand.
