Fine, kinda boring. What really bothered me about this movie, though, was that this cool commentary on holocaust remembrance gets squashed in next to these two overwritten characters. I get that the holocaust tour was supposed to be a canvas upon which these two “mismatched cousins” (as the film’s synopsis describes them) explore their relationship and the holocaust tour itself is not the focus of the movie. In other words, you’re supposed to see them develop in the context of…
John Chu makes good on high expectations. The Wicked Movie elevates the broadway show with new orchestrations, elegant sound design, and dazzling sets. Erivo is brilliant of course but Grande steals the show in Act I with her Galinda-isms.
The Wicked musical has always suffered from an underdeveloped plot—the animal suppression storyline, in particular, is woefully lacking in depth—but it’s the thrill of the music that makes the show worthwhile.
Finally: most Fiyero actors have always seemed too gay to make the part feel real but Jonathan Bailey… really takes the cake in that department. Not a straight bone in that prince. I loved it
