  Mean Streets has all the Scorsese hallmarks, Catholicism, Organized Crime, violence, moral quandaries, Italian Music playing as someone’s murdered, Rolling Stones songs etc. He had to make this before he made Goodfellas. Couldn’t have happened any other way. That’s all to say it feels like a proto-Scorsese film. One step past primordial ooze, like a fish with legs.
