A beautiful, understated performance from Robert Duvall, who won a richly deserved Oscar for his work here, as did playwright Horton Foote for his screenplay. Able support is provided by Tess Harper, Betty Buckley, young Ellen Barkin, and the great Wilford Brimley. Authentic and REAL.
The cinematic retelling of the Finnish epic poem Kalevala. This beautiful fantasy film from 1959 was originally a co-production between Finland and the USSR. It was later acquired by Roger Corman, who chopped it up and dubbed it. Something very silly resulted. That Cormanized version was featured on the fourth season of Mystery Science Theater 3000, to hilarious effect. But this original version is quite lovely, if just a little slow moving. The cinematography and visual effects are stunning.
One of the most iconic of all the disaster films. Sure, there's a LOT of shouting and overacting, but what a cast. A suspenseful, fun movie.
I mean, honestly, what else needs to be said about this cinematic icon. One of the most entertaining films ever made.
