Inscrutability: The Movie
I’m grateful Lynch unapologetically followed his muses but this one is not for me.
Was not expecting the Beck needle drop or Terry Crews appearance.

Enthralling, Disturbing, Confounding, Hilarious, Tedious — so, y’know, Lynch. Kind of a relic of its time and definitely makes sense in the context of other late 90s indie/arthouse touchstones (Wenders, Coens, Tarantino, Soderbergh) yet simultaneously timeless and singular. I was engrossed for pretty much all of it and there is certainly no shortage of striking visuals (though the middle act smacks a little too Bobby Briggs/James Hurley for my taste overall). NGL, wanted more Pullman.
Centering its narrative around a child makes its immediacy feel remarkably visceral and its heightened/raw reality feel emotionally true. Very glad I made the decision to get out to see it on the big screen during its small theatrical run. One of the most moving films of the year.
Always happy to revisit a favorite film and very grateful for the chance to see this one projected again (with a killer sound system) thanks to Crying at the Shed, despite a couple technical hiccups.
