The Tale of Zatoichi 1962
Weighed against the rest of the Zatoichi films, this first entry stands out for its sparse action. Ichi draws his sword only three times, by my count, and only twice in actual combat! But it's impressive how many of the series' characteristic elements were baked into this first entry, chief among them Ichi's persona: his sly humor, his trickster's approach to bullies and cheats, his resistance and anger toward unjust authority, his avowed loner status, his sense of shame around…
